Playa del Carmen: A Top City For Remote Entrepreneurs

Fun fact: Dynamite Circle has been hosting events in Mexico for location-independent entrepreneurs since 2017.

We started out spending time together every year in Mexico City, and slowly began hosting gatherings in Playa del Carmen.

With over 120 members (and counting) in Playa as their home base or a city they visit frequently throughout the year, it made sense to host our second-largest annual conference, DC Mexico, in this city.

Our co-founder, Dan, took a trip to Playa in 2024 to scope out a new venue for DC Mexico—the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen. We’ll be there again for this year’s edition of DC Mexico!

Enjoy Dan’s travel log and get a glimpse of what you can expect from DC Mexico 2025. Join Dynamite Circle to get your ticket to the event.

Travel Tips

To get to Playa Del Carmen, the easiest way is to book a flight to Cancun.

Dan says: From Austin, Texas it took me 2.5 hours. I was lucky there was no line at immigration, so I was officially stamped into Mexico 10 minutes after landing.

Depending on the time of day, it's a ~45min drive from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen. There are a bunch of transportation options at the airport, including cabs, rental cars, and public buses, with friendly staff to help you out.

There’s now a train (Tren Maya) that runs from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen, and the Grand Hyatt also offers roundtrip shuttle service for individuals and groups.

One fun option is to book premium vehicles from a company like STP Caribe. You can get a fancy SUV or limo, and you can order drinks or snacks to ride to Playa in style.

Dan says: Mexico is unique in that they have beverage stations (the locals call them "bars") directly outside of the airport exits. In the interest of testing, I ordered this exotic mango margarita. It was delicious, and although not strictly approved by Andrew Huberman, I found my focus and mood improved slightly during the drive.

Collaboration and Connections

Dynamite Circle members are big on travel, family, wellness, and unique hobbies and interests.

The Grand Hyatt offers the perfect environment to have enriching business conversations and collaborate with other remote founders in a relaxed setting that accommodates balanced lifestyles.

Start your day with a clear mind by taking a dip in the lap pool or hitting the gym at the hotel’s spa. Grab a free lounge chair (included in your stay) to read or brainstorm by one of the hotel’s multiple pools. Mastermind with other remote founders while eating sushi as you overlook the beach.

There’s no lack of coworking spaces with good internet in Playa del Carmen. This is also true at the Grand Hyatt, with lots of common spaces and seating to hang out.

Dan says: What impressed me most about the venue from a conference perspective was the abundance of quality spaces to have conversations. The conference facilities are just below the main lobby. There's a lot of breakout rooms as well as a big ballroom.

Food, Fun, and Convenience

One Dynamite Circle member says living in central Playa del Carmen means “you'll have a coworking space, a gym, and an excellent beach all within walking distance.”

The Grand Hyatt is smack dab in the middle of the action of the city. Step outside the resort and there's 100s of restaurants, bars, activities, services, shops, and more.

There’s also music everywhere, all along the lively walking street of "5th Avenue." Everything you need is accessible on foot.

Pro tips:

  • Want to visit Cozumel for some diving? The ferry from Playa is about $25 per person, last we checked.

  • The food in Playa is remarkable for its quality, especially the Italian food. There are some pretty good Thai options, too.

  • Get a table at "Harry's” for the best steak in Playa (a great spot for business discussions, too.)

Dan says: I found the very best cover band in Playa del Carmen just a few doors down from our hotel. Their rendition of Jon Bon Jovi's Runaway was a 9/10, so I asked them for their card and will continue to follow their career on Instagram.

The bustling nightlife and food scene of Playa del Carmen

Dynamite Circle members in Playa love its amazing weather, white sand beaches, natural cenotes, world-class diving and snorkeling, great nightlife, and vibrant food scene. It’s also a great city for traveling families and easy to acclimatize if you don’t speak Spanish fluently.
